As small as the world may be now due to technology, there are still a lot of people who do not know about the various cultures and practices of people around the world. This, of course, may put them at a disadvantage at some point in their lives. Should they travel or meet a client, not knowing the background of whomever is met may very well lead to unfortunate or embarrassing incidents, and even misunderstandings.
Though this may not have been the original reason for the creation of Justin TV, this has become one of its uses. People around the world are able to broadcast anything through this platform, and the billions of people from anywhere around the world will be able to access and watch that stream. Access is free, and would not even require the registration if one would simply like to browse through the number of channels that are active on the site.
This was not always the way the platform worked. Originally, it has one single channel which was broadcasting from a certain Justin Can, who had decided to show the world how he lived his life. Just like what is seen in “The Truman Show” but with the permission of the participant, Justin decided to wear a web camera and just keep the stream on for twenty-four hours a day without stopping. This immediately caught the attention of the media, Months later the site was opened for public use, and it was getting an average addition of two channels per day coming from more than 60 countries.
The website continues to draw attention, but things have never been too easy for the site. Complaints about its compliance to the copyright law have been raised. Although Justin.TV complies with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, it has still pushed for more stringent copyright compliance for its users. Currently it has gotten into a deal with Fox for real time filtering of the streams that go through the website.
One incident that made a huge impact on the site’s performance was the suicide that happened in 2008. One user wrote a suicide note and then broadcast himself ingesting an excessive amount of drugs which resulted in an overdose. The father stated that a lot of people were to blame in his son’s death, including all those who were watching the video as it was being broadcast. The CEO responded by stating that they respect the privacy of the family, and that the video has been removed due to its violation of some policies of the website.
Despite the problems that the site has faced though, it still continues to render a service to the people of the world by amplifying their voices and broadcasting it to the rest of the world. This is a place where a lot of knowledge can be found, and this would be through the ideas and experiences of others who have decided to share what they have with the rest of the world… all through Justin.TV!
